You are being invited to take part in a research study conducted by the researchers named above. Below is detailed information for you to consider when determining whether or not to participate. Carefully consider all of this information and ask any questions you may have about it before deciding whether to participate or not.
Voluntary Consent: You are being asked to volunteer for a research study. It is your choice whether to participate or not. There will be no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled if you choose not to participate or to discontinue participation.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to gather information on food insecurity, cooking confidence, and prior knowledge of nutritious eating. You are being invited to participate because you are at least 18 years old and a Binghamton University Student. It is expected that approximately 50 individuals will be participating in this research.
Procedures and Activities: At a cooking demonstration, you will scan a QR code of a flyer to complete an online Qualtrics survey as the pre-demonstration assessment. This survey will include questions on: food insecurity, cooking confidence, and prior knowledge of nutritious eating. You may choose “Prefer Not to Say” or discontinue from completing the survey at any time. You will also receive a handout with recipe information. After the survey, you will observe a live cooking demonstration. Your participation is completely voluntary and you may leave at any time. After the cooking demonstration, you will scan the same QR code on a flyer to complete a similar, but different version, of the online Qualtrics survey as the post-demonstration assessment. Additionally, you will receive a second handout about cooking safety skills and extra recipes. There is no cost or compensation for participation.
Duration: Your time commitment for the cooking demonstration will be approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Risks: Some of the foreseeable risks or discomfort that can be caused from participation issourced from questions about food insecurity, cooking confidence, and prior knowledge ofnutritious eating. Slight risk of breach of confidentiality.
Benefits: Participants will be able to taste the food cooked in the demonstration. However, there is no guarantee participants will receive any other direct benefits.
Alternatives: Participation is voluntary, and the only alternative is not to participate.
